Description

Skunk-Ape (Strigopithecus foetido) When ancestral Sasquatches made the journey across the Bering Land Bridge they weren't the first pongids there. America had a reasonable diversity of generally smaller and slimmer species of forest and plains dwelling ape-men that had arrived in the Miocene. With the onset of the various glacial periods many of the genus's found their tropical forest habitat disappearing and along with competition from Gigantopongo they eventually all died off. Except from one species. The Skunk-Ape managed to survive the Ice Ages in the swamps of Florida, a tropical eden in a changing North America. Today they are found in areas of swamp and palmetto that would be home-earth Florida and Louisiana. They are easily recognisable from Sasquatches being much slimmer, darker and longer armed and with an odd face for an ape, equipped with huge orange eyes to help with a nocturnal life and a mask of white around the eyes. These features give it the name Strigopithecus which means 'owl-ape'. They are also partly arboreal, coming into the trees to their den of moss and leaves during the day. Skunk-Apes have a much more carnivorous diet than other pongids feeding on fish, frogs, insects, eggs, chicks and lizards. They are named because of their awful stench that arises from the food that they take back to their dens which often rots away in there which becomes matted in the fur along with the mud of the swamp.
