Description

Papuan Rhino (Rhinoceros sahulicus)

Length: 3-3.6m.
Distribution: The whole of mainland New Guinea, except from the central mountain range.
Diet: A variety of leaves, grasses, fallen fruit, shoots etc.

Papuan Rhinos arrived in New Guinea when Sundaland and Sahul collided and were the only species that managed to survive in Australasia. Although, mainly a solitary animal they will go off into breeding pairs and are seen congregating in forest clearings or in mud wallows. They are a brown-grey colour, have warty, armoured skin and the horns of the males can grow up to about 21cm while the females are much smaller. When they are fully grown they have no natural predators.

I think I figured it out why rhinos and such haven't made it to New Guinea or Australia, even during the ice age.
